Effect of the Sequential Administration of Two Doses of Furosemide on Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension in Thoroughbred Horses
نویسندگان
چکیده
Compared with a single 250-mg dose of furosemide given intravenously 4 h prior to exercise, the administration of two sequential intravenous doses of furosemide (4 and 2 h prior to exercise) does not cause further attenuation of exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension in Thoroughbred horses exercising at their maximal heart rate. Therefore, the sequential administration of two doses of furosemide may not affect the incidence or severity of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage more than the administration of a single dose of furosemide. Pulmonary Vascular Pressures of EIPH-Positive Thoroughbred Horses During Exercise Performed at Maximal Heart Rate After Administration of Various Doses of Furosemide
A linear dose response to furosemide in terms of attenuation of the exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension does not exist in Thoroughbred horses. Furosemide 2.0 mg/kg IV given 4 h before exercise further significantly ( p , 0.05) attenuates the exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension compared with the 250-mg dose routinely used at Illinois racetracks. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of furosemide for prevention of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) in Thoroughbred racehorses under typical racing conditions. DESIGN Randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded, crossover field trial. ANIMALS 167 Thoroughbred racehorses. PROCEDURES Horses were allocated to race fields of 9 to 16 horses each and raced twice, 1 week apart, with each...

The attenuating effect of furosemide premedication on exercised-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension is similar when the drug is administered 2, 3, or 4 h before exercise. However, this effect is not observed when furosemide is administered 1 h pre-exertion. متن کاملEffect of furosemide on pulmonary blood flow distribution in resting and exercising horses.
We determined the spatial distribution of pulmonary blood flow (PBF) with 15-micron fluorescent-labeled microspheres during rest and exercise in five Thoroughbred horses before and 4 h after furosemide administration (0.5 mg/kg iv). The primary finding of this study was that PBF redistribution occurred from rest to exercise, both with and without furosemide. However, there was less blood flow t...
